We Finished AND Survived The Half Marathon!

We made it! We had 4 sisters, 2 bother-in-laws, and a niece that all ran the Bryce Canyon Half Marathon too! That's a small portion of my family- about 1/7 of it- but more than we have ever had running it all together. I would have had lots of pictures to share if only my NEW camera would have co-operated- looks like it'll be going back to the store. This is a crop of the group picture for the privacy of the others in the group. If you can't tell, I was FREEZING COLD! It was at least sprinkling the WHOLE TIME. And towards the last couple of miles it was down pouring and I was soaked to the bone.

I learned a bit about myself on this run. I had a blast for the first few miles and it was so fun to have family and my husband right there with me. I knew I'd be running slower than the rest but with all that happened I felt I did pretty darn good that I even finished. And my family rocked it too! My niece was first in her age group! My sister and her husband finished in 1:45!! That is amazing to me! And my other family members than ran sure did awesome too!

We got about 2 hours of sleep the night before, then of course my baby was sick(worried me the whole time I was running), I had to use the "potty" and I started my period(sorry for those who don't want to know) at mile 5... I was cramping the rest of the way, and then mile 7 1/2 I found out I have asthma- and apparently was having an attack along with a panic attack. I have never felt so scared(for myself and my own health) before. My throat was closing up and I was wheezing bad. I completely stopped running or walking and really thought I was going to pass out. My husband was in view but I couldn't call to him, luckily he stayed close and had turned around to see where I was. Then I tried hard to just focus on my breathing and walking.

There was a volunteer helper who came to see how I was doing. He asked if I had ever had asthma before to which I replied no. He asked if I wanted to be checked out in the ambulance but quite frankly I really wanted to finish the race- although if my husband had not been there I would probably have given in and stopped at that point. He said if it didn't stop before we reached the ambulance that I needed to get checked out right away.

From this point on, it was mostly walking to the end of the Marathon. I luckily didn't need to stop for the actual Ambulance because by then I had managed to get my normal breathing pattern back. I couldn't listen to music for almost the rest of the half because it distracted me from my breathing. My sweet husband was with me the whole way. I seriously could not be more thankful for him. I wanted to quit but could not give up because he was right there with me and he was willing walk with me as much as I needed. He could easily have finished way before I did but he stuck with me.

I was able to control my breathing right up until I ran through the finish line, then I just broke down in my husbands arms until I could get composure back and breathe normal again.

I am happy to say that I finished! Not without the help for sure! But I have officially ran a half marathon. I felt the support of many family members, my husband, and especially my Heavenly Father and Savior.

I don't plan to run another half marathon any time soon and I'll for sure be headed to the Dr.'s before I run anything longer than a couple of miles. I'm just so grateful I got to return to my children and my family after the race and ever so grateful for my sweet husband. Heavenly Father has blessed me sooo much.

With that said, I will not be able to blog for the rest of the day(accept for the giveaway winner) and will be slower with posts this week. I will be announcing the winner of the Jamberry Nails giveaway as soon as possible. Thanks so much for understanding!

6 DAYS UNTIL MY FIRST HALF MARATHON!

OK, I've been a bit of a slacker when it comes to posting about my training because I'm not sure if there are many really reading or caring...BUT I have been doing it! I have ran into some struggles along the way but I officially have ONLY 6 DAYS until the race- really less than that. I'll be finished in 6 days from now!
It starts at 6 am on Saturday.

My training has been tough and sometimes I have slacked... usually because I have run into lots of pains or pulled muscles. I am really hoping nothing will hold me back come Saturday morning. I run 2 miles today and 3 miles on Wednesday and then I don't run until the half on Saturday so my legs should be recovered and ready. I will be stretching for an hour a day to make sure my legs and muscles are nice and loose for the run because I ALWAYS need to stretch during my runs. It seems like I can't stretch enough.

Anyway, it has been tough but worth it so far! I will be so excited to say I finished the half! I'm not running to win... I'm running to complete a personal goal of simply RUNNING a half! To be honest, I have completed a lot of firsts when it comes to working out and running by just signing up for the race and following through with the training as much as possible. I've ran my own "10K's" about 5 times and then some just for training for this thing... and I have NEVER ran a 5K or 10K before!

At times I have completely wanted to give up and wondered if I would make it as far as I have already... but I have had to remind myself, My body WAS NOT made to be WEAK!

I know my creator and I know that we may run into injuries or illnesses of sorts but our bodies are really quite amazing. It's our mind we need to work on the most! I CAN DO THIS THING! :)

My camera recently broke so I made sure to buy a new one over the weekend because I WILL be taking pictures of this event! And of the views! I want to take in the run- not just run!
It is in Bryce Canyon National Park and it is beautiful there so I'm sure the sunrise will be worth a few pictures!

My husband, 4 sisters, brother-in-law, and even 2 nieces will be running the race too! So it'll be loads of fun! Although... out of the group, I'll probably be the last of them to finish. Oddly, lots of my family are runners... not me, normally, not me anyway. But this week I AM A RUNNER! :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, now for a little self observed insight into myself from my 5 mile run this morning... I have finally done it TWICE NOW! YAY!

It's no secret that running to music helps out a TON by either increasing the tempo or keeping a steady tempo. It also keeping your mind off of the road or treadmill. I can't stand running without music anymore.

Today I realized that I have a unique gift, growing up I have always made analogies relating life- even the smallest simplest things in life to the Gospel and Jesus Christ. That gift also applies to other areas of my life. Today as I was running, I was imagining every song having to do with music. Silly huh?! But man it was funny!

Here are some of the lines from songs I listened to today. Can you guess the song and artist?

"Go on. Go on. Leave me BREATHLESS."

"The reason that you had to care. The traffic is stuck and your not moving anywhere. It's a beautiful day! Don't let it get away. You'r e on the road but you've got no destination. Even if that doesn't ring True, you've been all over and it's been all over you..."

"Is it getting better? Or do you feel the same? Or will it make it easier now?"

"Just maybe you need this, and I didn't mean to lead you on. You were all I wanted, but I just can't finish what I started."   LOL! I so feel this way about running, especially two miles into the long runs but somehow listening to the song is a wake up call for me and I keep running because I don't want to give up on myself!

"Forget me not. Those are your words." -Today I needed to be back in time for my husband to get to work... it fit.

"I know it's hard for you to understand what I'm going through." -I can imagine my body saying this to my mind while running. My body is usually saying NO to running but my mind say "JUST GO"!!

"You remind me of who I really am!"

"By now you should have somehow realized what you got to do. I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now"  LOL... another one that was quite funny today. I sometimes curse running and sometimes I love it.

and from the same song...

"All the roads that lead us there are winding..."
"cause maybe you're gonna be the one that saves me"  literally could be true for many of us.

And seriously, this one I was laughing at today...

"Would you dance if I asked you to dance? or would you RUN and never look back?" First of all, I am not a fan of this song, never have been but today it was funny.  In this line it makes me think of all those past relationships that I would and did run from, yikes! lol!

Same song, totally gives it away.

"I can be your hero. I can take your breath away" Running is heroic to me for a few reasons, 1) It is super tough. 2) It is very good for your health and literally can save you. 3) When I watch people run a race, there is a personal intensity in each individual that just amazes me. I just think they are so dedicated and tough!

Needless to say, it gets really funny(and who doesn't enjoy a laugh to start their day) when each song becomes about running.

"I love you" "I hate you" "You leave me breathless." "Can I be your Hero?"

It's just funny! No?

I've asked before and I'll ask again, *hoping for more responses*

What do you listen to when you run?

I'm finding that my good ol punk music from my high school days can get me moving but I love to switch it up lots.

Jogger's Mace- Running Safety.

Mace Pepper Spray Gun - Pink with Pepper Spray Cartridge and a Water Practice Cartridge
OK, so I have officially been running for a few months now and have reached the point where the miles are just too long to run on a boring treadmill. I normally don't get to run with others because between my husband and I, we are lucky to get time to run at all, let alone with anyone else.

And thanks to my sister-in-law(and yes, THANKS, you may have saved my life as I will no longer be running unprepared) I was told about a LOCAL story of a female runner being attacked(and much worse) MID DAY. I have always felt self-conscious about running by myself and try to be very aware of my surroundings while I'm out but in the back of my mind I have also felt like there was no way someone that creepy would be prowling around my town. Well, the guy has NOT been caught and I am completely creeped out that I even went running by myself while he has been out there somewhere.

SO, I'm packing next time I go running. No not a gun, but a MASE sprayer. Although, I am seriously thinking about getting a concealed weapons permit now. I just don't want to give up my running due to my fear of the creepers out there. Running is hard for me in the first place but now that I have gotten so far with it, I feel like I need to keep doing it to stay active and healthy. I'm not going to stop running but I'll be prepared IF anything happens.

Anyway, here are some
Running Safety tips.

1) Never run alone.(again, this is the hard part for me. I rarely get to run with people.)
2) NEVER run in the dark... especially alone. (I don't... but as you can see creepers come out in the day time too)
3) Run in highly populated and trafficked areas, main streets or super busy trails... so it will look like you are with people and so there is an audience to witness any such crime-  therefore causing perps to stay away.
4) Carry MASE or even a small concealed weapon(with permit).
5) Don't use headphones while running outdoors. If you need music, just use the speakers on your ipod or MP3... if you don't have one with speakers... get one.
6) Don't run the same time every day or the same trail every time so an onlooker won't know your schedule. -Great tip from my niece.

The pink MASE gun(comes in other colors too) shown is only like $80! While I really like it(it's the girl in me) this jogger MASE spray can is only $13 and just as safe. It has a strap that wraps around your hand and the can fits in the palm of your hand. This was my purchase today at Sportsman's Warehouse.

Nope no coupon for this one... but worth every penny.

Runners Quote of the Day... ringing true for me.

I get these "Daily Kick In The Butt" quotes from Runners World through email and sometimes they are just silly to me but some are really great. Today's was perfect for what I have been trying to accomplish. I am always needing more time but it is hard to pull myself out of bed... and honestly it wouldn't have happened today if I didn't have the help of my husband waking me up... my alarm sure didn't get me up.

I ran 2.5 miles in 28 minutes(11.2 minute miles)!!!

The first .75 mile was running outside from my house to the gym, then one mile inside, then another .75 back! This was good because it was uphill on the way there and down hill on the way back. A little variation. Since I live so close to the gym, really, I should always just run there and back.

So hopefully today I get lots more out of my day!

101 Kicks in the Butt

"When you run in the morning, you gain time. It's like

stretching 24 hours into 25. You may need to sleep less

and get up earlier, but if you can get by that, running

early seems to expand the day."

-Fred Lebow, Founder of NYC Marathon via Runners World

And for even more DAILY KICKS IN THE BUTT... GO HERE for 101 ways to keep you motivated to run!

My 5 favorites are:

*Create a BLOG to track your runs and progress! :)
*Mama get a new pair of shoes! (You can watch for a great deal, I got my Fila's from Kohl's for $26 on clearance. I guess they were last seasons brand. I love them too!)
*Forget time!! -Just run for fun.
*Good to-go playlist- so important! I can not stress that enough!
*Play in the Street... dance a little! :)

And one more... just because it's so dang applicable!

*THE PILE OF DISHES  in the sink  CAN WAIT till the sun goes down. Your tempo run can't.

Now go read the other 95 Kicks in the BUTT and get running!!!

**On a side note, I have FINALLY seen the numbers on the scale drop, only two pounds but I have been running now for a couple of months... in complete contrast to my lack of physical exercise previous to these months. It's a really good thing that is not my real reason for running or I would have quit 7 weeks ago, lol!**

Top 5 excuses not to run...

After running 5 miles last week I felt awesome. On the other end of the spectrum... this week, I have ran 2 miles total. Not so amazing. Good thing the week isn't over. Glad I got them in today(yes... just this morning) but I need to identify my "excuses" for not running and find solutions.
So here are my Top 5 Excuses:

5) TIME! TIME! TIME!
Between my husband's schedule and raising three children... we really have to coordinate our time for running so one of us can watch the kids. Not only that but I have SO MUCH to do around the house... how can I find the time for running?

4) SLEEP!
I can never seem to get enough SLEEP! With three kids(one being a baby), there are lots of sleepless nights- or at least very interrupted nights of sleep. Remember this post? I often say I'm way too tired to run... I didn't get enough SLEEP.

3) UPSET STOMACH
Who wants to run when their stomach aches? This usually follows too large a meal or too small a meal.

2) CAN'T FIND MY RUNNING GEAR
I hate laundry... I hate digging through it too. Enough said.

1) SELF DOUBT
I often feel like I just can't do it. I can't run the miles I'm supposed to so why even try?
A bit of a downer I know... but I do find myself thinking this too often.

So here's the hard part...

How do I overcome these excuses?
Just an FYI, I'm brainstorming here and some of the ideas may be ridiculous...

5) Wake up early to run. Stay up late to run. Run during lunch. Buy a really good jogging stroller... then the kids can come.

4) Get to the bottom of why my kids aren't sleeping well... help them sleep better so I can sleep better. Running in the morning should actually help me sleep better at night. read before bed. Quit watching tv before bed. Take sleeping pills...lol!

3) Eat a small meal or snack before I PLAN to run. In other words, plan to run so I can think ahead and eat accordingly. Bananas or some whole fruit are great before I run. This should really benefit my health anyway.

2) Seriously, just FIND IT! Or set up a "workout station" where I have shoes, socks, shorts, tee and under garments ready. And don't forget to charge and take my Ipod and headphones- this is crucial for a good run. Also, just have a hamper for workout gear... wash that load every other day.

1) Surprise myself! Seriously, if anyone can do it, why not me?!

Remind myself of what I have accomplished in this life.
I've been skydiving for pete's sake! And took my turn attempting to surf, para sailing, and flying on one of those dune buggy carts with a huge propeller and parachute- does anyone know what I'm talking about? Can't remember what that is called but it was one heck of a rush over the Southern Utah Desert Mountains!
(I may have attempted surfing but I would have to say I would NEVER try SHARK SURFING!- I mean seriously!
This guy probably got eaten for dinner after this ride)

AND MOST OF ALL! I HAVE GIVEN BIRTH TO THREE BEAUTIFUL KIDS!!!
Here's proof, pictures are from our recent trip to Hawaii... add that to the list... I have flown over the ocean!

If anybody can do it, it should be a mom
And all you other adventurous people out there:)

What keeps stopping you from reaching your goals?
How are you going to kick those excuses to the curb?!

Runner's World Quote of the Day

"I run because it's so symbolic of life. You have to drive yourself to overcome the obstacles. You might feel that you can't. But then you find your inner strength, and realize you're capable of so much more than you thought."

Arthur Blank, Co-founder of The Home Depot

Now if only Arthur knew how bad his Home Depot Project Loan was- at least when you are trying to pay it off and they won't take you money!! Maybe he'll overcome the obstacle of receipts on a flippin POST CARD too! Read more about that here.

Thanks Runners World for the quote!

Despite the sourness I felt when I saw Co-founder of The Home Depot... I totally agree with Arthur when it comes to running.

I am not running to loose weight.
I am running to gain energy, endurance, and more
importantly to show myself that I can do it

Loosing weight will just be a perk if it happens! :)

I GET IT!!! Confessions of a first time HALF marathon runner.

(My face is always more red than this after running)
*For explanation of why your face gets so red go here.

When my husband suggested it, I didn't know why in the heck I would actually agree to run a half marathon. I have NEVER liked running. I played soccer growing up and I loved soccer accept I hated the running drills and the switch backs. I dreaded them every time. I guess there was just this bit inside of me that wanted to dream of being able to run a half marathon... at least once just to say I did.

Well, friends, you have to be able to run 1...2...3...4...and even 5 MILES first!!! I don't remember ever running more than 3 and usually 2 at most in all my growing up years- I must have done it at least once during soccer but really I don't remember it.

Today....TODAY... just now I RAN 5 MILES! Count them. 1. 2. 3. 4. and 5 miles!!!!

If you are laughing you are probably one of those that runs 5 every day... that's cool... laugh... BUT I GET IT NOW!!! At least some of it...

Everyone says "It's not the destination but the journey that matters..."
but I dare say the destination is just as important!

I would not have reached a 5 mile run without a plan and preparation leading to this destination. My husband is ever encouraging but was quite surprised when I told him I ran 5 miles... (and they were 11 1/2 minute miles... not to brag or anything). He took me to Runner's World and helped me set up a custom training calendar for my very out of shape body.

I have been able to adjust if needed but overall know where I need to be each week with my running. It has been amazing. The funny part is I THOUGHT I was supposed to run 5 miles two Saturdays ago- but I haven't ran for about 1 1/2 weeks because of a family vacation so I was trying to pick up where I left off. After I ran 5 miles today... I looked at the calendar... oh... that's not until next week. Yeah, I ROCK!!!

Anyway, getting back on track... I did not really enjoy the journey (although music helped me keep my mind more focused) but I believed the destination was worth it.

Now I KNOW IT! MAN IT FEELS GOOD!!!
(yes, I may be a bit cheesy at times...)

I RAN 5 MILES! 11.5 minute miles!

What do you do to enjoy your runs?

What do you enjoy most about running?

What tunes pump you up and help you bust out the miles?

Invest in Yourself!

I often feel guilty for spending money on myself. Usually because I want to buy clothes or get my hair done. As you can imagine, as a mom of three I don't spend much money on myself.

Lately I have had a realization though, I need to Invest in Myself

I don't mean in the sense that I need to go buy a whole new wardrobe or anything but that I need to have some of my daily efforts go towards my sanity, my health, and my own personal perception of ME! (Country song seems to be playing in my mind right now... I want to talk about I, me, my...)

I recently posted that my husband has been trying to get me to run a half marathon with him. And more recently I posted about the liar within me. I have felt like I can come up with any excuse to get out of running but what does that really do for me? Just holds me back.

Well, I can't hold back any longer, I have officially invested in myself! Yesterday my husband and I registered and PAID for the half marathon! Hence why I posted about the pack of 30 pair no show socks! LOL! Perfect timing right?

So as I was running last night and feeling some pains but feeling more of a push from within to do it-and with the help of a friend to run with- I was realizing... this is what I need. I need to invest in myself.

As a mom(a few times over)... my life and body has not been my own. While I'm perfectly ok with that (because I have a three beautiful children and handsome husband to show for it) I have started to feel like I really need at least my body and energy back... really it will benefit not only me, but my entire family.

My oldest loves to know that mom and dad take time to go running. She loves to run- she's only 4 but by example from her dad she has learned to love it already. I'm still working on the loving it part but it is by my husbands example that I'm trying.

Just in the past few weeks I have been running, I have felt changes, maybe not seen them, but felt them. Sore muscles, joint pain, time and excuses have been trying to hold me back but I have kept trying, slowly but surely.

Once I looked at it as investing in myself, I realized the potential I had and that each time I invest in myself, I get a great return.

So that $40 registration fee for the race, those new shorts I got with Kohl's cash, and those 30 pair of socks for $15... That entire $55 spent... is well worth it!

Just by running, I have had time to visit with friends and be a bit more social- something I used to be very good at, I have had renewed energy, I have had time to clear my thoughts, I have wanted to eat healthier and cook better foods, I have been able to work towards a real goal for myself and only myself(no one can MAKE me run), I have had a purpose with each workout. Not that they are easy but purposeful. I am investing in myself and by doing that, I am receiving great returns personally and my family is benefiting from it too!

Running is not the only way to invest in yourself but I suggest that you do take time for yourself and really think of it as an investment in YOU! It doesn't need to cost money at all really. Maybe you want to learn to love reading... there's a library for that... maybe you just want to start with walking, there's plenty of sidewalk! Just take time to invest in yourself and start receiving dividends!
