HUGE Epic Mickey Debt Count Down!! Month 20!

Oh goodness...

We are only 4 months away from the mark we set to PAY OFF all our debts(besides the mortgage). This month sure did give it a good push! We decided to stall looking for a new home and put our savings for the down payment into our Debt Snowball!
Mickey is finally changing his looks a bit!

FINALLY DONE WITH HIS EARS! WOW!
As for our original goal of being out of Debt in 4 months, I'm sure hoping we can do it but it's going to take selling our condo to get there! We originally were going to rent out the condo but have decided {I think} that selling it is the best option for us in this time of our lives. We'll probably never get the chance to get such a good deal on a potential investment property again but we'll get the chance to be debt free and possibly have a 20% down on a new home!
Praying and hoping it works out that way!

As Dave says, pay off debts first, then save and invest!

And as I have always been taught by my parents and through my faith, have faith and trust in the Lord. While we have our agency, when we involve the Lord in our lives and every decision, we can be directed to where and what we are supposed to really be doing in this life and the next! I know that as we do our best the Lord helps make up in the areas we lack.
Thank Heavens for that!

BACK TO CASH ONLY! My New Lil' Budget Book!

For quite a while now I have been using my debit card instead of actual CASH.
I know right?! I did WHAT?!!!

We(my husband and I) got to a place where our budget wasn't as tight and we liked the idea of earning perks for everything we spent.. BUT then it hits us.....
"We don't really WANT to earn perks as fast as we are! Just means we are spending too much $$"

Even though it is still "technically" cash when using a debit card, I find myself feeling ok with spending a couple extra bucks here and there when swiping plastic. It's not as hard to part with when I don't see it. As for my husband, I think he's the same way but he doesn't do most of the shopping so I realize a majority of the problem is with me!

"When you use CASH, you spend 12-18% LESS than when you spend on PLASTIC!"
- Dave Ramsey

As I stated before, Pregnancy and Finances don't mix too well- at least for me! SOOO I made me a new MLBB to get back into the swing of things and I'm using CASH BABY!

I personally LOVE My new Lil' Budget Book!! Isn't it adorable?!!

(It even makes me want to start making them again!)

So to all of you who might be back at this stage again, know you aren't the only one!
Let's get back on track and start saving more and spending less. :)

Here is a sneak peak of my new Craft Closet too...
I still have lots to do with it but it's for sure feeling like my favorite space in the house already!

Epic Mickey- Oh My Word it's been forever! Month 18~

Life seems to be slipping away from me, especially in terms of the Epic Mickey.

If you've been keeping up all these months and following the blog, you know we have started house hunting which has changed our budgeting goals a bit and Epic Mickey, while he was still getting filled in, got less attention for a few months. :( Not what we intended to have happen which means we need to get refocused again...

So I missed Month 17 all together and now I'm posting Month 18 very late...Month 18 should have been posted March 1st to represent everything we paid in February.

Well here it is now...

(Another one will soon follow for April)

**As a family we decided to change our lives by paying off debt. We needed motivation to keep us going. This Epic Mickey represents how much debt we owe. Pregnancy & Finances don't mix.

I have come to the conclusion that no pregnant woman should have to do the budget. Ever. At least once you hit 6 months and beyond...finances should no longer be up to you to take care of. Don't get me wrong, my husband and I actually do finances together but I am the one that does the shopping for food and clothing for the kids, gifts and whatever else comes up. Now approaching the end of my fourth pregnancy, I can say the same thing happens every time... so this is...

Why Pregnant Women Should NOT grocery shop or budget:

1) Impulsive Buying amplified!
This is probably a no brainer. You always hear "Don't go the grocery store hungry or you'll spend more." It's very very true... and I'd like to add, Don't go to the Grocery Store pregnant and with cravings.... you'll spend WAAAYYY more than you should.
Think Cravings + Hunger + Gone shopping= $$$$
(and a possible tummy ache later.)
And what pregnant women is organized with their coupons? Not this one!

2) Balance is off in the 3rd Trimester!
It's true, we are wobbly women when we reach the end... and if you haven't noticed, our physical balance isn't the only thing off... emotional balance, mental balance and yes financial balance all goes array! To be honest, it's all too much to handle for me as an expectant mother. Which leads me to the next topic...

3) We need less stress!
While I like to think that some days budgeting can be fun(like paying off debt or saving more $$), during the final round of pregnancy, this has never been the case, lol! I feel like any little thing can set me off when I'm huge and pregnant. I have enough to worry about. So I suggest going back to the cash budget(if you aren't already doing it) so you don't stress about the balance in the bank... you have your balance right before you. You can't over draw the bank account if you are using cash... yes it has happened TWICE this past month... SO not proud of that. I *thought* I was on top of it but I've decided in the 3rd trimester, I can never be sure of anything...lol.

So, if you are like me, make it easy on yourself. Send someone to the store for you with a list of necessities and some cash. If you can't send someone, be sure to USE CASH and take only the amount that will cover what you really need.  I'm making myself a new MLBB just for this purpose. No extra stuff with me and no way to go astray on the budget.

With CASH.... Once it's gone it's GONE.

Anyone else agree with me on this?

Turbo Tax - Save 16%

Well, friends, it's that time of year again! Tax time!

(If you are new to Shop At Home you will also receive a $5 credit for signing up!)

It's super easy to use and you'll know exactly how much you will get back right away too!

I have to admit, I actually find it exciting to file taxes each year- usually because I am NOT the one doing the filing. LOL... and because I like to see what kind of return we get.

There are lots of debates about this topic-
one that comes to mind is the old "truth" that If you are getting a lot of money back, then you paid too much taxes to begin with. I say "truth" because it is partially true and you could find ways to get money back NOW instead of waiting for it until Tax season BUT with all the tax credits that are being handed out these days you really can get a nice tax return even if you paid the lowest tax rate possible...and then throw it into your debt snowball!... *wink* *wink*!

Right now, on Shop At Home, you can  get 16% CASH BACK on Turbo Tax products!!!
That's HUGE!

There is of course their FREE Turbo Tax addition(you won't be eligible for cash back of course because 16% of $0 is still $0...lol)

I do recommend upgrading if you have more than the very basic tax return to file. Turbo Tax is very user friendly and does most the work for you. You'll see your estimated tax return continue to rise as you input more financial information.

I love watching the $$$ amount keep going up!

Other products range from $19.99 to $74.99... here is a snap shot of the products.

So go find out today just how much you can get in Tax Returns and Cash Back :)

To Rent or To Sell??

TO RENT OR TO SELL?
That IS the question!

Basic Condo Details:
Upper unit
3 bed
1 bath
1105 Sq. Ft. (No garage)
Community Pool

Condo Purchase Price Sep 2011: $57,500
Remodel Expenses: $10,000+
Total Cost of Condo: $67,500
Current Condo Value Jan 2013: $80,000 or $750 Monthly Rent

So those are the quick figures to do the simple math...

DO WE SELL?

*If we sell now we'll be hit with high income tax rates(we haven't lived here for 2 years yet). I don't know how much higher the rate is(anyone else know?)
*Sept 26, 2013 will be 2 years(Still 8 months away)
*Baby #4 will arrive in first part of June(4 months prior to the 2 year mark)
*If we wait and sell the value could change, but assuming it doesn't... that's $12,500 profit and a lot more back in our pocket since the remodel was paid for in cash and we don't owe the full $57,500.
Estimating it to be about a $28-32,000 lump of cash. Which would pay off student debt completely and then some.

DO WE RENT?

*If we rent it out, we can do it now and buy a home any day. It does lower our $ amount we are qualified to borrow by about $20,000-25,000 though.
*We could rent it for $750, possibly even $800 a month(paying for monthly mortgage twice)
*We would not be paying off student loans near as fast but we would have the rental income for years to come.

So seriously! Help me out....
WHAT WOULD YOU DO AND WHY?

GIVEAWAY ALERT! Baby Bundle Giveaway!

GIVEAWAY ENDS TODAY! :)
Be SURE to Enter!

As you may know, I haven't posted as much lately and there's a HUGE reason why(along with many other reasons...)

I'm PREGNANT!

We are expecting our FOURTH child in June 2013!

Can you imagine? 4 kids!!! I feel completely overwhelmed and excited all at once. Raising kids is a blessing and a challenge. One of those challenges, whether having your first or your fourth, is the BUDGET.

In our experience so far, expenses are always higher than we expect.

That's why this bundle from Perrigo is so awesome!

It's about saving money on essentials for your baby but still getting great products to serve your needs! Trust me, there are A LOT of needs when having your first child, let alone, your fourth!

My Review:

First, I must say, I can not fully test the exact items I was sent because, well, I need the baby to come first ;) With that said, I have used products similar or exactly the same prior to this review.

I received for review:

·         One can of Parent’s Choice Premium
·         One can of Up & Up Advantage
·         One copy of  Save a Bundle: 50+ Ways to Save Big on Baby Gear
·         Baby bottle drying rack
·         Formula dispenser
·         Bottle brushes

THE FORMULA:
My first baby was pretty much a formula baby. I nursed for oh, a total of 1 1/2 months! Yup! Nursing was by far one of the hardest trials I had gone through (up to that point). We tried all different kinds of formula, including different Store Brand Formulas like Parents Choice. It was much more reasonably priced than the leading brands out there. I have not gotten to try out the Up & Up brand yet but I am happy to know about it because I live very close to Target! Love that store!

Here are some details about the Store Brand Formulas.

·         Perrigo Nutritionals store brand baby formula is sold under individual retailer brands, including:
o   Walmart’s Parent’s Choice
o   Target’s Up & Up
·         They are as nutritionally complete as the national brands, yet cost 50% less
·         All store brand formulas meet or exceed FDA standards

FORMULA DISPENSER & BOTTLE BRUSHES ARE A MUST HAVE!!
I have to say, I LOVED the formula dispenser!!! I couldn't believe something SO SIMPLE could make life so much more simple, lol! Just fill in the sections with the appropriate amount of formula for one bottle and dispense when needed. So great for traveling and on the go moms... and lets face it, every mom is pretty much on the go for one thing or another these days!

It should go without saying that cleaning bottles is the more tedious, boring, and sometimes very disgusting  part of raising your child on formula. A bottle brush is also a MUST HAVE! Even if you only use it for pumped milk or for when they get bigger and drink juices. A good brush doesn't have to cost a lot!

BOTTLE DRYING RACK:
I don't know why but I never considered getting one before. Now that I think of it, most are ugly, bulky, or cute and expensive. This one, however, is budget friendly and actually cute! Looking at it, it makes so much sense to me and I am excited to use it in the future!

SAVE A BUNDLE BOOK:
Did you know that the average middle income family spends $14,320 on the baby's first year alone?!! That is astounding! I can't say that I spent that much on my first baby but to be honest, I'm not sure what we spent... that was almost 6 years ago for us! In this book you will find great tips on finding baby gear for less, whether it is the car seat and stroller or crib or it's the diapers wipes and formulas, or of course the never ending wardrobe we(at least this mom) always want to buy for the little one.

My favorite titled chapter: "The Poop on Low-Cost Diapers!" HA!
Little FYI from the book, From a study done, they have found that babies go through 7,000-9,000 diapers from birth to potty training!!! HOLY SMOKES that's a lot of poop! And I can believe it after having 3 of my own! Now take that tip, if you pay 23 cents+ for one leading brand diaper vs's 18 cents per store brand diaper(yes sometimes we couponers can get them for less)... that's $2070 for 9,000 name brand diapers or $1620 for 9000 store brand diapers! Either way it's a lot but you will come away with a savings of $450 when you buy store brand!!! Personally, I have loved using Up & Up diapers. I think they work great on the littlest to the bigger diaper stages too!

OK! OK! NOW for the GIVEAWAY!!!!

One winner will receive all the following as

pictured above:

·         One can of Parent’s Choice Premium
·         One can of Up & Up Advantage
·         One copy of  Save a Bundle: 50+ Ways to Save Big on Baby Gear
·         Baby bottle drying rack
·         Formula dispenser
·         Bottle brushes

Epic Mickey Debt Countdown MONTH 14

QUICK RECAP:
We are on a more slow repayment plan with debt at the moment but this month we were able to pay a large lump sum because my hubby sold off a bunch of his cattle. So grateful for his wise decision to be a cattle rancher for fun! :)

We were able to fill in 44 squares this month! Feels great and helps the momentum pick back up again after our past few SLOW months.

WARNING LONG INFORMATIVE POST ON TRACKING YOUR FINANCIAL PROGRESS

Change has become about the only constant in our finances right now, lol.
Not due to income changing but to necessary expenses changing. With that in mind we have been trying to narrow down our families particular financial changes.
Let us share with you what we found. (Everyone's will be different)

Our Changing Financial Situations:

PROBLEM 1) Underestimated Medical Expenses for the Year

Last month, our oldest got her tonsils and adenoids removed... that is a total of about $4000 for the bill. Not to mention all the Dr.'s sick visits we have had to make- only a whopping $80 each time and then of course the prescription to go with it... not cheap.
Hopefully she won't be getting sick as much now that she has a clear throat!

SOLUTION To 1:
Since we have met the deductible (and exceeded it with this operation) we decided we better just maximize our health insurance use. Our boy was next in line for getting his tonsils out anyway. He may need the surgery worse than his big sister. So, here comes another big bill, luckily we'll only be paying 20% of this one.

PROBLEM 2) Priorities can change
We began with a plan to simply pay off all debt(besides the condo) before saving for a real home

SOLUTION to 2:
Our family is already too big for this tiny 1105 square foot condo without any yard. Now we are trying to save money for a down payment as well as pay off debt so that when we are debt free we can be ready to move.

We keep going back and forth on this one because we could just fully pay off the debt and then begin to save the down payment but really, I think I'm getting more anxious to get into a house with a yard and enough space for all of us. Our style is literally cramped! lol.

This goal may change next month, lol! *sigh*

PROBLEM 3) Growing Grocery Bill
There are a few main reasons for this
1)The Economy
(PLEASE boot out Obama! We need a real recovery!)
Food prices are so much higher now! Just even a couple of years ago I could get milk for $1.50 or less and cereal(with coupons) for a $.25 to a $1!! Now it's hard to get milk for $2.50 and cereal(with coupons) for $2!

2) Growing Kids
They just don't stop growing! And that's a good thing! With a 5 1/2, 4 and 19 month old, they need more and more nutrition. GOOD nutrition. I've said before that we are no longer a 1 Box Mac & Cheese Family, we are a 2 BOX but really we are almost a 3 box! That's TRIPLE the expense! No I don't consider Mac & Cheese to be good nutrition but I can't consider it to be a super cheap meal anymore either! BTW, Kraft Mac & Cheese used to be a quarter on sale... do you remember those days? Now a sale price is $.75-1 a box!

3)Gas Prices
This just goes back to the Economy but when gas prices are up, food prices and all product prices are too! When I was 16(it was over a decade ago but still...) gas was under a $1! The lowest I paid for it was $.76 a gallon! NOW, $3.80-$4.00+ a gallon. We do drive to the store for food so that goes into the cost of groceries too.

SOLUTION to 3:
Well, I don't have much of a solution here accept that we need to adjust as necessary to fit the nutritional needs of our family.
Oh and walk to the grocery store with a HUGE HUGE stroller... ok, J/K... possible but not really for us. I'm not sure I'm ready to look like the really crazy coupon lady! lol!
**Buy a Deep Freeze and do freezer meals. LOTS OF THEM.
Finally,
It is a need for us. Cutting down on the grocery bill as much as possible is the best I can do.

OVERALL Solution:
With all of this happening, we're realizing that life will only continue to get more complicated and unpredictable. However, since we know it is becoming more unpredictable, we can plan for it to be unpredictable! Confused?

Well, now we can look back at the past year and say,

"Wow we underestimated what we would need for medical expenses this year."

So next year, we can look ahead and at least say,

"Ok we need to plan that our kids will get sick (hopefully not as much as the past year) so we need to have that money set aside for Dr.'s visits and prescriptions."

It's been a year of financial learning for us,
and it's not over yet!

The GOOD part is when we look back on the past year, we have really done well over all.
We have paid off close to $38,000 in debt
And have been putting my husband through school part time!

Remember we sold our second car(that helps a ton), paid off our remodel expenses, most of our borrowed down payment, and made extra student loan payments as well as our normal mortgage payments.

**We don't include our mortgage debt on our Epic Mickey as that will be a separate goal of it's own once all other debt is gone.

So as we are coming closer to another year end of finances,
I urge you all to take a look BACK to see what you have done well and where you can improve with your finances. If you are married, please include both spouses in the conversation.

We all know finances can cause a lot of arguments and conflicts in marriage and many marriages result in that ugly "D" word due to such conflicts so try to handle with care and prepare together!

Feel free to share what you have learned with us too!

Epic Mickey Catch-up!

I realize that I haven't posted updates on the Epic Mickey for a while now.
We have months 11, 12, and 13 to account for!

We are in a weird financial spot right now, more because we have so much life going on that we have realized we need to re-adjust and re-calculate current expenses and future expenses.

Here are our TOP topics when it comes to Finance:

1) Paying Off Debt
We are sooo sick of DEBT!

2) Figuring out how to make more money to help pay off debt
Again... we are SOO sick of DEBT!

3) Saving for a HOME
Our family is too big for this teeny tiny condo!

4) Growing Grocery Bill
With food prices going up, coupon prices going down, our family food consumption doubling... we need more money for groceries. (We are now a 2 box Mac & Cheese Family instead of one...lol)

5) Preparing for future Medical expenses
Removing tonsils isn't cheap! Next time we'll be more financially prepared.

Ok. so with out further delay... here is our progress... LOOK CLOSE :)

Somehow we didn't get a picture of Month 12! I swear I took one
(being the big 1 year mark and all) but can not find it!

Check out past Epic Mickey's HERE.

$20 for 1 entire year of Sunday Newspapers!!

Kelly from Dixie Dollar Deals has an amazing deal on Sunday Newspapers- if you don't already know, this is the best way to stock up in coupons to build your stock pile and food storage FAST and CHEAP!

This is what she has to say: I just got an email that I am so excited about!  I can now offer you a whole year's newspaper subscription (52 weeks) of the Sunday paper for only $20!  That makes each paper only $.38, instead of $1.50 at the newstand!  Holy moly, this is the best rate I have seen in a long time (last year when I signed up for the newspaper I had to pay $50 per paper for my subscription)!

If you are interested in getting into couponing, or have been waiting for a really good deal - this is the time to get it!  You would only need to clip one coupon per week to start saving money on your groceries and make up for the cost of the newspaper!

Here are the details:

If you are interested in getting into couponing, or have been waiting for a really good deal - this is the time to get it!  You would only need to clip one coupon per week to start saving money on your groceries and make up for the cost of the newspaper!
  • Offer valid for Salt Lake Tribune or Deseret News.  I cannot sign you up for The Spectrum.
  • I cannot renew your current subscription, and you cannot cancel your current subscription to get this rate.  I can, however, add additional subscriptions to what you already receive.
  • There is a limit of 2 Salt Lake Tribs and 2 Deseret News per household, for a total of 4.
  • For couponing, the recommendation is to get 1 newspaper for each person in your family.  I have always done this and it has never been too many newspapers for our family.  You can never have too many coupons, but you can have too few!
This rate is only valid in the month of August!  Call me at 435-313-2072 or email me at dixiedollardeals@gmail.com to get this rate!  Your paper will arrive the week following the week that you place your order!
COULD YOU DO ME A FAVOR AND LET HER KNOW TheMLBB SENT YOU? This just helps me know how many are reading my blog locally as well as spread the word about my blog. Thanks!
Remember, if you need help figuring out how to get into the world of couponing (and do it in a way that will save you time - I promise you will not be clipping coupons all day every day!), contact me to host a free coupon class.
