BACK TO CASH ONLY! My New Lil' Budget Book!

For quite a while now I have been using my debit card instead of actual CASH.
I know right?! I did WHAT?!!!

We(my husband and I) got to a place where our budget wasn't as tight and we liked the idea of earning perks for everything we spent.. BUT then it hits us.....
"We don't really WANT to earn perks as fast as we are! Just means we are spending too much $$"

Even though it is still "technically" cash when using a debit card, I find myself feeling ok with spending a couple extra bucks here and there when swiping plastic. It's not as hard to part with when I don't see it. As for my husband, I think he's the same way but he doesn't do most of the shopping so I realize a majority of the problem is with me!

"When you use CASH, you spend 12-18% LESS than when you spend on PLASTIC!"
- Dave Ramsey

As I stated before, Pregnancy and Finances don't mix too well- at least for me! SOOO I made me a new MLBB to get back into the swing of things and I'm using CASH BABY!

I personally LOVE My new Lil' Budget Book!! Isn't it adorable?!!

(It even makes me want to start making them again!)

So to all of you who might be back at this stage again, know you aren't the only one!
Let's get back on track and start saving more and spending less. :)

Here is a sneak peak of my new Craft Closet too...
I still have lots to do with it but it's for sure feeling like my favorite space in the house already!

Quote of the Day- Dave Ramsey

"I have been broke. I know how scared I felt, and I know how fast I wanted to get out of debt. I know how you feel, and I have learned that what really works is unbelievably fierce, focused intensity."
-Dave Ramsey
This is soo true! Gazelle intensity is the way to go!

Staying Gazelle Intense!

During my husband's schooling I had high ambitions to make it through debt free. Well, apparently that was just not meant to be... as soon as we moved to our new destination and my husband was in his first week of school, they "so kindly" announced a MAJOR 50% HIKE in tuition. THAT was NOT planned for!

We had to use student loans and lots of them. :(

We did our BEST to live on the savings we had on hand, which was originally going to get us about a year through school and living expenses. NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Close to $36,000 in student loans later and $7500 out of pocket(not to mention living expenses) for a summer semester (to avoid even higher tuition hikes in the upcoming year) my husband had his MBA certificate.

Was it worth it? YES!

There may have been some debate on that and even some regrets as to WHERE he got his MBA. But overall, we know that was the path we had taken, meant to be or not, it is what it is. And now we have the wonderful journey of paying off a HUGE amount of debt as a family! LOL... just wonderful!

We regularly have open conversations in our household with our children about how to save, how to plan, and how to set and reach goals. Yes, it is is worth it when we look at what we have accomplished so far, and even more worth it when we see what our children are learning too!

On a side note, I may be a bit too crazy with coupons at times because my oldest daughter often says funny things at the store.

Some quotes from my thrifty little girl...

"No we can't buy that, it's not on sale."

or...

"Sorry, we don't have a coupon for it. Not today."

or my all time favorite...

"We don't buy anything unless it's FREE!"

Underdog of Debt...

I just love this article on Dave Ramsey's site today! And with it being football season, the analogy fits great. Also great for those of you who may be trying to get the attention of hubbies and fill them in on Dave's plan, if your hubs likes football that is.

From Underdog To Champion

What can the New York Jets teach you about getting out of debt?

from daveramsey.com on 02 Sep 2010

The New York Jets never had a chance—or so said the experts.

Going into Super Bowl III in 1969, the AFL Champion Jets had scrapped their way through the playoffs and a 9-5 regular season record to reach the league’s premier game. But all of that hard work landed them the reward of having to face the juggernaut Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl.

The Jets entered the game as an 18-point underdog. The Colts had finished the season 13-1, having won 10 games in a row going into the Super Bowl (four wins were by shutout) and coming off a 34-0 victory over Cleveland. Some media considered Baltimore the greatest pro football team ever.
But within a few hours, the New York Jets made football history by shocking the Colts 16-7. In an iconic NFL image, “Broadway Joe” Namath trotted off the field after the game and pointed to the sky with his index finger to signal, “We’re number one.” Forty-one years later, the game is still considered to be the greatest upset in Super Bowl history.

So, you’re probably asking yourself, what does Super Bowl III have to do with Dave Ramsey? Good question.

Many people who get started on the Dave Ramsey program are up against some kind of obstacle. These obstacles come in the form of credit card bills, student loans, car payments and overbearing mortgages.

The numbers vary by person. For some people, a $5,000 credit card balance may seem like a hole they will never get out of. Other people are up against $100,000 of student loan debt, battling depression and considering bankruptcy.

These people may think they don't have a chance to overcome these financial obstacles. Like the New York Jets from Super Bowl III, they feel like underdogs.

Good underdogs have one thing in common—they are scrappy, self-motivated people who never quit. If the Jets walked on that field and believed they couldn’t win, then the Colts would have beaten them senseless. In order to win, they had to believe they could win.

If you want to get out of debt, you have to believe you can get out of debt. That belief will come when you sit down and make a gameplan for your money.

NFL teams don’t make it to the Super Bowl by flying by the seat of their pants during the season. Earning a trip to the Super Bowl is a long process that starts back in film rooms, training sessions, strategy meetings—long before pre-season even begins.

When it comes to your money, you’ve got to sit down monthly—with your spouse or accountability partner—and map out your plan for that month. If you’re in debt, you’ve got to make a point to create a debt snowball and be precise about following it.

Mark a date on your calendar when you know everything is going to be paid off. Once you gain momentum and start throwing extra money at your debt snowball, you’ll be out of debt even sooner than your goal!

Along the way, you’re going to have doubters, but don’t underdogs always have nay-sayers? People and “friends” may make fun of your trimmed-down lifestyle—no eating out every night, no overpriced cars, no vacations on credit, no electronic toys you can’t afford.

But just let all of these doubts add fuel to your fire. You’re living like no one else now, so you can truly live like no one else later. You’re going to make the sacrifices today—consider this your “two-a-day” practices in 95-degree summer heat—but the payoff will be a life with financial peace and without debt. Eventually, you’re going to win your own personal Super Bowl on the day you yell
that you are debt-free!

So take a lesson from the New York Jets—the underdog can be a champion after all.

Fall Finance Tips From Dave

"Dave's Tips to Get Back on Track"

The Great Recovery
"Now that summer's over, it's time to refocus.
It's really easy to let the budget slide during the summer break. Hey, we've all done it before—taking that extra day of vacation, going to the pool too many times, or sending the kids to the movies because they're "bored." Many people find themselves back in debt or struggling with money when fall comes around.

And then you have the fall expenses. School supplies are being marketed everywhere we turn. Mommy, I want that backpack! And the glow-in-the-dark pens and the 1,000 crayons! Sound familiar? What happened to the days when eight crayons lasted for a whole year?

Have you noticed how the car dealerships have increased their marketing, trying to get you to buy the "perfect" vehicle so they can get the new models in? And of course, all the retailers are screaming, "Come buy some new clothes for your fall wardrobe because you deserve it!" Really? You deserve it? No, you don't.
Now more than ever, it's time to refocus and get back on track with your money. It's so important to have a plan for your money every month, or you can easily fall into the no-good debt trap.
Here are some tips to get you back on track with your money:

Sit Down and Evaluate

Take a few minutes to look at your bank accounts and really understand what you see. If you don't, you run the high risk of living these next few months like Gomer Pyle on Valium, with no clue about your money. You don't want that, do you?

Update Your Game Plan or Start One

A budget is your game plan, where you tell your money what you want it to do. This isn't rocket science! Just give every dollar a name on paper before you get your paycheck so it won't all be gone in a week.

Put Cash in Envelopes

Since you spend 12–15% more when you use plastic than when you use cash, try the envelope system. Take some envelopes, write the budget categories on the envelopes, and use only the allotted money to purchase specific things. If an envelope is empty, don't buy anything else in that category for the month. It can wait.

Set Boundaries

A lot of this centers around the ability to say the word NO and really mean it! Sometimes you're going to have to tell yourself, your spouse, and your kids "NO! It's not in the budget!" so be prepared. It's a phrase you'll be glad you know how to say.

Start Saving NOW for Holidays

Now is the time to start planning and setting aside any money you want to spend around these huge retail seasons. Make a list and stick to it! If you start now, you can keep Halloween and Christmas from following you into next year!
Commit now to making your budget a priority over the next few months. Just by incorporating these seemingly small changes into your daily habits, you will reap many rewards in all areas of your life. It's time to get back on track, and we're here to help you along the way!"

I love that the cash envelope system is specifically mentioned :) And also that saving for Christmas should start NOW! As you know if you are a couponer, now is really the time to save for Christmas, set aside some cash each month and take advantage of those killer deals available so you won't be scrambling last minute for high end gifts and high end prices.

*each month on PerkStreets FB page they have special categories you can earn up to 5% cash back! (up to $250 a year)
Let me just clarify, you can earn an endless amount of Perks but only up to $250 a year in the 5% cash back section. Not bad if you ask me!

Save on CAR Insurance through Dave Ramsey's ELP

So remember when I told you about the promos going on for the "Rainy Day Cash Giveaway"?

Well when you enter the giveaway it asks you how you feel about your current car insurance. I felt like I got a good deal but I was open to finding out if I could get a better deal. I seriously HIGHLY doubted that my insurance policy could be beat because I have compared prices many times before and no one was able to beat Geico... well I can't say that anymore.

Because of Dave Ramsey's ELP(Endorsed Local Provider) in my state... I'm saving a total of $190 a year through Progressive from what I paid before with Geico. And the real kicker... I'm getting an even better policy with MORE COVERAGE! I definitely was shocked! I have compared with progressive before and they were always higher so I suggest making sure you use an ELP.

I also suggest to enter the giveaway because even if you don't win the $1000 you sure can win by saving on Insurance through Dave's ELP! Thanks Dave and thanks to his ELP Rick Morris!

And while you are at it, order his book for only $10!!

Budget Tip for the Week: Four Must-Have Insurance Policies, $10 Dave Ramsey Sale, and Rainy Day Cash Giveaway

You all know I love Dave Ramsey's book "Total Money Makeover". I think it is so important to be prepared and be able to whether the storms that are sure to come. His book has taught me so much. It's the only book I read in 2 days and that I actually liked reading(some of you may be thinking I'm really boring right now, lol) because I actually learned a lot that applied to my families needs and it isn't impracticle advice. I consider it to be very sound advice and even though no one says it is easy, they all say it is worth it! I'm still working through the steps as we just got finished up with school which left a trail of student loans.

Right now you can get his book for only $10... and any other products for only $10!!! When I bought it, it was $15 and then shipping too so it's a great time to buy. I love them for wedding gifts too. All couples really should start out on the same page financially. You'll have much less struggle later on the issue.

Dave Ramsey is also doing a RAINY DAY CASH GIVEAWAY.
This is the perfect chance to get your emergency fund boosted and start knocking out debt.
BUDGET TIP OF THE WEEK:

This article is taken from Dave Ramsey's site. I think it is so important to have yourself covered in case of an emergency, by doing so you save yourself the stress and the financial pain that could have followed if you were unprepared.

Dave says it best:

"Just because some aspect of money isn’t talked about much, doesn’t mean it’s not important.

It’s obvious that a budget or a debt snowball need to be checked frequently to make sure that you’re sticking to them. If stuff like that gets away from you, it can turn bad quickly. Make sure to refresh yourself on these four insurances:

Life Insurance
If you die with no life insurance, your family will most likely be stuck in a dire situation and have to make drastic changes, all the while grieving you. You should have eight to 10 times your yearly income set aside in a term life policy. That way, if you pass on, your family can invest the money and, at a 10% return, replace your income.

This is something that shifts more often than you think. Every time you get a raise, have a child, buy a house or have some other significant life event happen, you need to make sure that you have enough insurance to cover it. Don’t take this lightly; one-third of adults in the United States carry no life insurance, and more than half a million in the prime of their lives die prematurely each year.

68 million Americans have no life insurance at all. That's the equivalent of every man, woman, and child in the green-colored states.

Long-Term Disability Insurance

If you die, your life insurance will take care of your family. But if you are permanently disabled, you will be unable to produce an income and yet still need to be cared for. In that case, you need long-term disability insurance that will provide about 70% of your income for an extended time period, usually until death or age 65.
You can usually get it the cheapest through your workplace. And you need to. About 49 Americans become disabled every minute and three in 10 in the workforce today will become disabled before they retire. With the average monthly benefit from Social Security disability being $1,004 a month, you can’t afford to not have this type of insurance.

In the past hour, almost 3,000 Americans became disabled. That's 49 every 60 seconds.

Long-Term Care Insurance
This isn’t necessary until you hit age 60. After that it becomes vital. A nursing home can cost about $50,000 a year per person. If you and your spouse go into an assisted living facility with $300,000 in life savings, you’ll have it used up so fast you won’t believe it.

If you are approaching 60, start looking at long-term care insurance. Don’t buy it before then (it’s not necessary enough at that point) or after (it can get too expensive).

Find a long term care insurance agent in your area who Dave recommends.

Homeowner’s/Renter’s Insurance

You should never own or rent property without having yourself covered in the case of a fire, flood, burglary or some other disaster. Renter’s insurance is relatively cheap to get, so make sure to have some.

When buying homeowner’s insurance, get one that has guaranteed replacement costs. If something happens to your home and you have a policy without guaranteed replacement costs, you will only be covered for the value of your home at the time you took out the policy. That’s bad news if your house has increased in value. Make sure to have your full emergency fund in place so you can take the lower premium and higher deductible on it.

Another important aspect of a sound financial plan is to keep your Legacy Drawer up to date. Learn what needs to be included in your Legacy Drawer, in addition to the insurance infomation above."
