Epic Mickey month 42

Ahhh... Another successful debt reduction month!

Seriously, we are pretty excited to see progress again. It has brought in topics of freedom in finances and of being able to put our money into more exciting pots....like retirement....wait....what?! Not exciting for you? Ya me neither... But for my hubby it gives him a piece  of mind and that's worth it and a few years down the road it'll give me a piece of mind too.

Now we get to think of saving money for a car, house updates, family vacations, and even a bit of regular SPLURGE money. I have to tell you, Dave's way says to try and include splurge money into your monthly budget all the time but we didn't follow that advice because we just really wanted debt gone and didn't like the guilt of spending on ourselves every month at least until we got past our huge school debt.

Now, we are excited to put it back into the budget! We have been planning out our big Mickey vacation and it's so exciting to see a bright light at the end of the tunnel!

Check out past Epic Mickey's HERE.

Back Story:

**As a family we decided to change our lives by paying off debt. We needed motivation to keep us going. This Epic Mickey represents how much debt we owe. Each filled in square represents a dollar amount paid off. Once the entire Mickey is filled in, we will be debt free besides our home. Then we'll party in style with Disney to celebrate! We have included a monthly plan to have the savings set aside to pay for the trip too so we won't be back tracking just to celebrate. Take the journey with us as we share tips and tricks to save money, generate more money, free ourselves from the chains of debt and create a better future for our family and yours!

GIVEAWAY ALERT! Baby Bundle Giveaway!

GIVEAWAY ENDS TODAY! :)
Be SURE to Enter!

As you may know, I haven't posted as much lately and there's a HUGE reason why(along with many other reasons...)

I'm PREGNANT!

We are expecting our FOURTH child in June 2013!

Can you imagine? 4 kids!!! I feel completely overwhelmed and excited all at once. Raising kids is a blessing and a challenge. One of those challenges, whether having your first or your fourth, is the BUDGET.

In our experience so far, expenses are always higher than we expect.

That's why this bundle from Perrigo is so awesome!

It's about saving money on essentials for your baby but still getting great products to serve your needs! Trust me, there are A LOT of needs when having your first child, let alone, your fourth!

My Review:

First, I must say, I can not fully test the exact items I was sent because, well, I need the baby to come first ;) With that said, I have used products similar or exactly the same prior to this review.

I received for review:

·         One can of Parent’s Choice Premium
·         One can of Up & Up Advantage
·         One copy of  Save a Bundle: 50+ Ways to Save Big on Baby Gear
·         Baby bottle drying rack
·         Formula dispenser
·         Bottle brushes

THE FORMULA:
My first baby was pretty much a formula baby. I nursed for oh, a total of 1 1/2 months! Yup! Nursing was by far one of the hardest trials I had gone through (up to that point). We tried all different kinds of formula, including different Store Brand Formulas like Parents Choice. It was much more reasonably priced than the leading brands out there. I have not gotten to try out the Up & Up brand yet but I am happy to know about it because I live very close to Target! Love that store!

Here are some details about the Store Brand Formulas.

·         Perrigo Nutritionals store brand baby formula is sold under individual retailer brands, including:
o   Walmart’s Parent’s Choice
o   Target’s Up & Up
·         They are as nutritionally complete as the national brands, yet cost 50% less
·         All store brand formulas meet or exceed FDA standards

FORMULA DISPENSER & BOTTLE BRUSHES ARE A MUST HAVE!!
I have to say, I LOVED the formula dispenser!!! I couldn't believe something SO SIMPLE could make life so much more simple, lol! Just fill in the sections with the appropriate amount of formula for one bottle and dispense when needed. So great for traveling and on the go moms... and lets face it, every mom is pretty much on the go for one thing or another these days!

It should go without saying that cleaning bottles is the more tedious, boring, and sometimes very disgusting  part of raising your child on formula. A bottle brush is also a MUST HAVE! Even if you only use it for pumped milk or for when they get bigger and drink juices. A good brush doesn't have to cost a lot!

BOTTLE DRYING RACK:
I don't know why but I never considered getting one before. Now that I think of it, most are ugly, bulky, or cute and expensive. This one, however, is budget friendly and actually cute! Looking at it, it makes so much sense to me and I am excited to use it in the future!

SAVE A BUNDLE BOOK:
Did you know that the average middle income family spends $14,320 on the baby's first year alone?!! That is astounding! I can't say that I spent that much on my first baby but to be honest, I'm not sure what we spent... that was almost 6 years ago for us! In this book you will find great tips on finding baby gear for less, whether it is the car seat and stroller or crib or it's the diapers wipes and formulas, or of course the never ending wardrobe we(at least this mom) always want to buy for the little one.

My favorite titled chapter: "The Poop on Low-Cost Diapers!" HA!
Little FYI from the book, From a study done, they have found that babies go through 7,000-9,000 diapers from birth to potty training!!! HOLY SMOKES that's a lot of poop! And I can believe it after having 3 of my own! Now take that tip, if you pay 23 cents+ for one leading brand diaper vs's 18 cents per store brand diaper(yes sometimes we couponers can get them for less)... that's $2070 for 9,000 name brand diapers or $1620 for 9000 store brand diapers! Either way it's a lot but you will come away with a savings of $450 when you buy store brand!!! Personally, I have loved using Up & Up diapers. I think they work great on the littlest to the bigger diaper stages too!

OK! OK! NOW for the GIVEAWAY!!!!

One winner will receive all the following as

pictured above:

Epic Mickey Debt Countdown MONTH 14

QUICK RECAP:
We are on a more slow repayment plan with debt at the moment but this month we were able to pay a large lump sum because my hubby sold off a bunch of his cattle. So grateful for his wise decision to be a cattle rancher for fun! :)

We were able to fill in 44 squares this month! Feels great and helps the momentum pick back up again after our past few SLOW months.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WARNING LONG INFORMATIVE POST ON TRACKING YOUR FINANCIAL PROGRESS

Change has become about the only constant in our finances right now, lol.
Not due to income changing but to necessary expenses changing. With that in mind we have been trying to narrow down our families particular financial changes.
Let us share with you what we found. (Everyone's will be different)

Our Changing Financial Situations:

PROBLEM 1) Underestimated Medical Expenses for the Year

Last month, our oldest got her tonsils and adenoids removed... that is a total of about $4000 for the bill. Not to mention all the Dr.'s sick visits we have had to make- only a whopping $80 each time and then of course the prescription to go with it... not cheap.
Hopefully she won't be getting sick as much now that she has a clear throat!

SOLUTION To 1:
Since we have met the deductible (and exceeded it with this operation) we decided we better just maximize our health insurance use. Our boy was next in line for getting his tonsils out anyway. He may need the surgery worse than his big sister. So, here comes another big bill, luckily we'll only be paying 20% of this one.

PROBLEM 2) Priorities can change
We began with a plan to simply pay off all debt(besides the condo) before saving for a real home

SOLUTION to 2:
Our family is already too big for this tiny 1105 square foot condo without any yard. Now we are trying to save money for a down payment as well as pay off debt so that when we are debt free we can be ready to move.

We keep going back and forth on this one because we could just fully pay off the debt and then begin to save the down payment but really, I think I'm getting more anxious to get into a house with a yard and enough space for all of us. Our style is literally cramped! lol.

This goal may change next month, lol! *sigh*

PROBLEM 3) Growing Grocery Bill
There are a few main reasons for this
1)The Economy
(PLEASE boot out Obama! We need a real recovery!)
Food prices are so much higher now! Just even a couple of years ago I could get milk for $1.50 or less and cereal(with coupons) for a $.25 to a $1!! Now it's hard to get milk for $2.50 and cereal(with coupons) for $2!

2) Growing Kids
They just don't stop growing! And that's a good thing! With a 5 1/2, 4 and 19 month old, they need more and more nutrition. GOOD nutrition. I've said before that we are no longer a 1 Box Mac & Cheese Family, we are a 2 BOX but really we are almost a 3 box! That's TRIPLE the expense! No I don't consider Mac & Cheese to be good nutrition but I can't consider it to be a super cheap meal anymore either! BTW, Kraft Mac & Cheese used to be a quarter on sale... do you remember those days? Now a sale price is $.75-1 a box!

3)Gas Prices
This just goes back to the Economy but when gas prices are up, food prices and all product prices are too! When I was 16(it was over a decade ago but still...) gas was under a $1! The lowest I paid for it was $.76 a gallon! NOW, $3.80-$4.00+ a gallon. We do drive to the store for food so that goes into the cost of groceries too.

SOLUTION to 3:
Well, I don't have much of a solution here accept that we need to adjust as necessary to fit the nutritional needs of our family.
Oh and walk to the grocery store with a HUGE HUGE stroller... ok, J/K... possible but not really for us. I'm not sure I'm ready to look like the really crazy coupon lady! lol!
**Buy a Deep Freeze and do freezer meals. LOTS OF THEM.
Finally,
It is a need for us. Cutting down on the grocery bill as much as possible is the best I can do.

OVERALL Solution:
With all of this happening, we're realizing that life will only continue to get more complicated and unpredictable. However, since we know it is becoming more unpredictable, we can plan for it to be unpredictable! Confused?

Well, now we can look back at the past year and say,

"Wow we underestimated what we would need for medical expenses this year."

So next year, we can look ahead and at least say,

"Ok we need to plan that our kids will get sick (hopefully not as much as the past year) so we need to have that money set aside for Dr.'s visits and prescriptions."

It's been a year of financial learning for us,
and it's not over yet!

The GOOD part is when we look back on the past year, we have really done well over all.
We have paid off close to $38,000 in debt
And have been putting my husband through school part time!

Remember we sold our second car(that helps a ton), paid off our remodel expenses, most of our borrowed down payment, and made extra student loan payments as well as our normal mortgage payments.

**We don't include our mortgage debt on our Epic Mickey as that will be a separate goal of it's own once all other debt is gone.

So as we are coming closer to another year end of finances,
I urge you all to take a look BACK to see what you have done well and where you can improve with your finances. If you are married, please include both spouses in the conversation.

We all know finances can cause a lot of arguments and conflicts in marriage and many marriages result in that ugly "D" word due to such conflicts so try to handle with care and prepare together!

Feel free to share what you have learned with us too!

Finance Friday - Budget Tip - Buyers Remorse and Returns

Normally I don't allow myself to just splurge on things, especially for myself! And I don't think it was an actual splurge either. You help me classify it as you read on.

In about one month I lost 14 pounds!!! I was ready to celebrate! Who would be right?

I also made a deal with my husband a while back that for every mile I run I get to earn money for shopping for new clothes :) Yeah my husband is pretty much amazing for actually agreeing to this. That was about 100 miles ago when we made the deal then we budgeted the money in too.

Even better, part of it came straight from our PerkStreet rewards program for simply just using our debit card for purchases. We had earned over $100 to put towards a gift card. I chose T.J. Maxx (because we frugal girls all know that you can get a LOT for $100 at T.J. Maxx right??). So I headed to the store to shop for MYSELF! That alone was a pretty weird and great feeling- if you are mom, you might be able to relate to this feeling.

I knew I had the gift card money and then some that I earned through running so I piled on the clothes to try on... I was testing to see what size I was too since I had dropped so much weight. I was so thrilled when I tried on a SIZE 4 and it was sooo comfy and easy to pull on. And even a size 2 waist fit- accept my new runner thighs did not, lol. I had previously been a loose size 10 so you can image my excitement.

That's where it really started. I was feeling GOOD! So good that I tried on a lot of clothing! he! he!
When I came out of the dressing room with my stack, the lady asked the usual, "What are you keeping?"
My reply..."ALL OF IT!" with a big smile! I'm not going to lie, I've never had that happen before and I LOVED it!

I went to the register and checked out. To my surprise and bad math while trying to juggle 3 kids, the total was near $200- whoa! How did I get that much in there? Well, that's ok because that is really about where my total was with the gift card and earned money... so I just took it home with me...although I did ask, "What's your return policy?" Joking that my sweet hubby might make me return at least some of what I got. BTW, he was totally ok with it and said I earned it! Love him!

Sooo, then I tried everything on at home and made my sweet hubby sit through a fashion show. Am I so mean or what? Lol! I was still loving all my new clothes but I did leave the tags on. Then the next day came and I tried them on again and tried mixing and matching with clothes I already had. Then I realized that some of the clothes weren't screaming my personality as much as they were just screaming I lost weight and I have new clothes. So again, I set them aside still with the tags on them.

Day three came and guess what?!! Out of the 10 items I purchased, I took back 7 of them!!! Yup sure did. And I still LOVE the three I kept!

What to learn from this story:

1) Keep your receipts- especially if you are impulse buying.
2) Ask about return policies!! Some stores only give store credit.
3) Don't remove tags for at least 3-5 days after purchase so you KNOW you love it...
4) Try on the clothes but don't WEAR them for at least 3 days after purchase just in case you DON't end up LOVING them.
5) Return your unloved items for your money back!

What tips do you have to share with others about impulse buying and returns?

Budget Tip of the Week

I get to so many deals to share that sometimes my Budget Tip of the Week gets missed.

Through all my years of coupon shopping and saving lots I have realized there is a limit!

It's an old truth that more coupon shoppers' need to apply:

If you would not have bought it to begin with, and if it is not truly FREE and you wouldn't use it any, then you DID NOT save money on it!

My Life Lesson on this topic:

My first month I started coupon shopping, there was an amazing sale at Albertson's on sugary snacks like fruit roll ups, fruit snacks, chocolate granola bars, brownie bowls and so forth.

A few may be good to have on hand but more than likely I would NOT have bought so much and overspent because I was "getting a deal". Sure I only spent 1/3 as much as the normal price but probably 2 or 3 times as much as I would have without coupons.

We don't usually keep that much sweets around the house and we probably gained a pound or too because of it too.

I can happily say I haven't done that again!

Who handles your finances?

Sheesh, I really wish that sometimes I would just finish my post and publish it when it is most applicable. It is so funny to look back on it. This is really like reading my journal. This was in the beginning of January 2012... not too long ago really.

When you get to the end of this post... go check out this one (about how my husband WAS GOING TO taking over the budget... and why it is important you BOTH do it together.)

Don't you sometimes feel like this when you talk finances?! This is how the draft post below came about. I was stressed and tired of dealing with the budget. I don't think we were as dramatic as this picture... but you get the point.

January 2012

"My husband and I are coming up on 6 years of marriage this April. We have always discussed the finances together and try to always create a budget we agree on but when it comes down to the spending, I have always been in charge. I pay the bills, do the grocery shopping and the shopping for the kids clothing and needs. I even usually gas up the car and pay for the oil changes. THAT IS UNTIL NOW!

As you all know, I talk about budgeting, well, all the time on here. I live and breath budgeting and saving. But to be completely honest I realized that it was overwhelming me since having our third child. (BTW, I'm wearing my Super MOM cape right now-it's red... my kids nominated me...but somehow I don't feel so super in the finance department) I always felt like we would budget like we have in the past but we have constantly been going over budget, con. stant. ly. And it drives me CRAZY!!! We have always budgeted as tight as possible because we have always felt like we are in a situation that calls for it: being in debt and wanting out of debt.

Budgeting started to feel like a burden to me(yes, me, the one who says budgeting can be fun and happy-which it can when you have the right focus- I've temporarily lost it, lol) because I feel we are budgeting too tight and my husband feels like we aren't tight enough.  We have debt and more importantly, consumer debt because of our home remodel that had to come out of pocket. We borrowed from Home Depot with a project loan; it comes with 6 months no payment no interest...AND our 6 months will be up in the end of March. Yikes! Then the interest is 13.99%!!

While that scares me, we have a plan to have it paid off before the deadline. Anyway, getting back to my point... my husband had been saying that he doesn't know enough about what's happening with our budget and he's nervous about the upcoming debt. So I so kindly offered for him to take over the budget in the new year. Hoping that the grocery shopping and bill paying would go along with it. I feel that while I have provided our family with lots of savings through my coupon shopping, I am still overspending-according to our budget- for what MY family NEEDS.

So we will see if my husband can control the finances better than myself. The only thing is, he wants me to still do the grocery shopping. Darn it! So I will be going back to my cash envelope system at least for the next 3 months until the Home Depot loan is paid off."

And here is another one from about September 2012 while we were trying to patiently wait for the keys to the new to us condo.

"CAN I VENT???"

"After all, this is my blog right? I'll just start by admitting I'm a big baby! I guess that's why they say being the youngest child, you'll never be able to ditch the title "the baby".

Anyhow, I am also not very patient. I try to be but I've figured out that it only lasts so long and with this whole buying a home thing... it has been stretched out about a month too long... I mean who can be patient for 2 months?! I started out with the mentality of it doesn't matter much when we close because we aren't tied down to a rental agreement, we can turn in our 30 day notice at any point in time. Well, then I realized just how much we are spending on gas since now I am taking two trips into town every day for four days a week for my daughter to go to school... it's eating up my money!...

We WERE planning on being moved in BEFORE she started school. So when that time had come and gone... I started stressing a bit, or a lot. and now I'm falling apart. I do have to say that my real estate agent and my lender have been working extremely hard to get it done... I can say that I don't think Fannie Mae has nor has their agent or the underwriter who had 38 contingencies on the loan. I mean seriously... I might as well give a blood sample and finger prints right now... I'm sure that's whats coming next. Either that or she'll(I think it's a she) be asking me to go through my couch cushions to find all the coin that may have slipped in there so she can document that too... better empty my change box in the car too! I mean seriously, what do you want from me?!

P.S. Mrs. or Ms. or Mr. underwriter... I guess I should tell you about my off shore account... no lets keep that one a secret! Ha! So there! Ok, but really, lets not get any funny ideas... I'm not rich enough to have such things nor dumb enough to try and hide any such things... I am however going to be completely bald before we close on this home.... I may even wear a wig to the closing... and then I'll let you have that too because it must be worth something to you!

Ok... I'm done now. Wait no I'm not.... dear sweet underwriter, please oh please don't give me heck tomorrow and just tell me that you are done with all your contingencies and that we can FINALLY get this loan booked and the deal closed so that my family of 5 can move on with our lives and begin to actually put money in our pockets instead of yours! Thanks!"

Coins for Kids... my kids... not what you think.

I have a bit of a hard time motivating my children to clean, listen, quit fighting... ok well, I just have a hard time with them. Don't get me wrong there are LOTS of great times too... but my three children are all very young. the oldest will be 5 soon, then a 3 year old and a 1 year old. To say the least, they are so close together that not only do they LOVE each other, they are constantly around each other- except when Big sis is at pre-school so they tend to fight lots too.

Since we have a vacation coming up and I really don't need to be stressing over the little things I know they can do, maybe I can encourage my kids into doing them with a reward tied to the vacation! Every time they make their bed, clean the toy room, living room, bedroom, or simply do things without mom's help... they earn coin! YAY!!! And if they beg for mom's help... they don't get coin. If they fight, they LOOSE coin.

They get to do this until the day we leave for our trip, then we'll count it out and see how much they can spend to buy souvenirs. I know I'm not the first to think of this idea or anything but we just haven't had a reason for such a cause until recently. I don't want them thinking that their whole life I will pay them to do chores they should already do so having a goal for them to work toward, such as spending money for the vacation is perfect.

Then after that, we'll come up with a different plan like this idea I ran across months ago- and have yet to make it...
a "Caught ya being Good" method.

Quote of the Day- Dave Ramsey

"I have been broke. I know how scared I felt, and I know how fast I wanted to get out of debt. I know how you feel, and I have learned that what really works is unbelievably fierce, focused intensity."
-Dave Ramsey
This is soo true! Gazelle intensity is the way to go!

Staying Gazelle Intense!

During my husband's schooling I had high ambitions to make it through debt free. Well, apparently that was just not meant to be... as soon as we moved to our new destination and my husband was in his first week of school, they "so kindly" announced a MAJOR 50% HIKE in tuition. THAT was NOT planned for!

We had to use student loans and lots of them. :(

We did our BEST to live on the savings we had on hand, which was originally going to get us about a year through school and living expenses. NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Close to $36,000 in student loans later and $7500 out of pocket(not to mention living expenses) for a summer semester (to avoid even higher tuition hikes in the upcoming year) my husband had his MBA certificate.

Was it worth it? YES!

There may have been some debate on that and even some regrets as to WHERE he got his MBA. But overall, we know that was the path we had taken, meant to be or not, it is what it is. And now we have the wonderful journey of paying off a HUGE amount of debt as a family! LOL... just wonderful!

We regularly have open conversations in our household with our children about how to save, how to plan, and how to set and reach goals. Yes, it is is worth it when we look at what we have accomplished so far, and even more worth it when we see what our children are learning too!

On a side note, I may be a bit too crazy with coupons at times because my oldest daughter often says funny things at the store.

Some quotes from my thrifty little girl...

"No we can't buy that, it's not on sale."

or...

"Sorry, we don't have a coupon for it. Not today."

or my all time favorite...

"We don't buy anything unless it's FREE!"

Labor Day Weekend Sales...

This is a really big weekend for awesome deals on just about everything. Too dang bad that we a temporarily broke until this "soon to be house" of ours is finally ours... and we still have a week until payday, lol. BUT, if you are looking for great deals this weekend, I highly suggest hopping over to Freebies2Deals and checking out what's going on!
Freebies2Deals
Just remember, don't spend money on it JUST BECAUSE IT'S ON SALE(I am guilty of sometimes doing this, it's hard to remember so a reminder is nice)... make sure you would buy it even if it's not on sale first!

Perk Street Debit Card up to 5% cash back!

So I can't remember if I have already told you about this yet but I found PerkStreet through Dave Ramsey's website and basically to sum it up quick, you can have an online checking account with a MasterCard Debit Card and when you use that debit card at the checkout stand as a credit(non-pin purchase)
you earn CASH BACK!
Pretty sweet really.

On all NON-PIN purchases(run as credit and sign instead of enter a pin) you will:
*always earn 1% cash back
*first 3 months earn 2% cash back
*earn 2% cash back if your balance is over $5000 or more during purchase
*each month on PerkStreets FB page they have special categories you can earn up to 5% cash back! (up to $250 a year)
Let me just clarify, you can earn an endless amount of Perks but only up to $250 a year in the 5% cash back section. Not bad if you ask me!

Wahoo! Love it! We opened it up in July and haven't changed our spending habits and already have earned $50+ in CASH BACK! We can now cash it out, BUT we are going to use it for Christmas Shopping!
What will you do with YOUR cash back?

There are no hidden strings attached and it really does work! You can easily transfer cash from your current bank to PerkStreet. You can also do direct deposit too. It has been great for us and such an easy way to save some green!

I have no idea if or what I get but I do know that when we opened our account it asked for the email address of the person who referred us to them...I assume it would do the same for you, please use my email:) mlbb.etsy@hotmail.com

Thanks so much! Happy Saving!

Monthly HouseHold/Grocery Budget HELP?

Just curious, how much do you spend on household items and groceries for your family in a month?
And how many are in your family?

Obviously I'm a couponer and I try to spend as little as possible but think I sometimes have unrealistic goals even with coupon shopping. Our families budget needs more tweeking.

We try to stay at $300 for our family of 5(two in diapers) but keep finding that we go over every month. That does include ALL household items(diapers, wipes ect...) and groceries. I've stock piled a bunch the past couple of months in all neccesities so if I didn't go to the store at all for 4 months.... the only things we would be lacking are the fresh basics... milk, eggs, fruits and veggies(we have frozen fruit and canned veggies but it wouldn't last 4 months, maybe 2 but the garden shoudl start producing soon), and bread(but I could make my own).
I think we save more and spend less than the average family but I still feel like I keep spending too much. We are also trying to stock pile CASH for a down payment for a home so I'm feeling like I need more help on my budget but keep falling short, way short on my goals.
I'm feeling like I may be too hooked on finding great deals... whether for the pantry or for the home.

Any thoughts?

Seriously, don't be afraid to comment:)

Beginner Budgeting Tips

It's been a while since I've given any good budgeting tips... something I need to do more often for sure. Anyhow, I just read this article from All You magazine and besides the advertisements, it is a great place to start if you are feeling a bit overwhelmed with how to manage your money.

Learn How to Make a Budget(Basics):

-Calculate What You Spend
-Get organized(track your spending)
-Add up the numbers
-Develop a plan to fit your lifestyle
-Stick to your plan

I especially like how it says that if your budget makes you feel like you are wearing a straight jacket then you need to change it up. But always remember to live on less than you make!

I would just add that you NEED to use cash(debit cards & checks count as long as you aren't going into the overdraft!!)

Even with a debit card, we tend to overspend... the cash envelope system may be the way to go for you if you keep finding it hard to track your expenses.
