Final Epic Mickey Countdown and a Disney Freebie

**This post may contain affiliate links. Such links may provide a small commission. Thank you in advance for any clicks or purchases from my affiliate links. I try to provide you with only the best of links with products I love and think you will too. _____________________________________________________________________________________________

I love this freebie! We did one a while back but it's disappeared. You can create your own little vinyl decal family. I love the idea of making a cute picture frame with the decal and a picture from our Disney trip.

And if you didn't catch that...  we are totally COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS UNTIL OUR DISNEY TRIP!

My husband and I were questioning if Disney really is the right way to celebrate our victory over debt because well, it is quite expensive to get there.

But after reviewing all the Disney on a Dime posts, I started to think that maybe we really could do it and stick to a budget and let's be honest, my husband is super excited. We are all super excited!
It was something he grew up doing with his family(I did not). I did, however, grow up on a budget.

So we are going to Disneyland!
We decided to even let the secret out to our littles so that there is no turning back.
(We had a little swim party to celebrate- hence the swim apparel)

These are snap shots from my phone- please excuse the blur... also caused by extremely excited children who wouldn't sit still long enough for a photo. LOL!

To Disney or To NOT... feeling torn

Sooo... ya know 46 MONTHS later... and now seeing savings adding up.... My husband and I are feeling torn on whether we should actually spend a small fortune on a family Disney trip.

Don't get me wrong. WE LOVE DISNEY. We love the rides, the yummy treats, seeing the characters, seeing our kids(and our own) excitement and the escape from reality. Disney really brings it all. We just DON'T love the price tag.

I think that through those 46 months of pinching our pennies, something happened to us. WE CHANGED. We really do budget differently and we value what we have to work with SO much more now. We still have lots to learn but the feeling of dropping $2000-$3000 on a trip to Disney just isn't settling well with us. I have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to Disney with many of the posts on how to do it on the cheap... but even on the cheap, you'll still be forking over a fair amount of moola. Aaanndd.let'sbehonest. If you are going to Disney you don't want to worry about finances while you are there. They've made it so magical and inviting and EXPENSIVE... that experiencing Disney the right way -in my opinion- is not having to worry about the $$ spent on yummy park treats and a couple souvenirs as well as not having to tote around a cooler for your meals... have I made my point yet? Of course, if you are willing to pinch your pennies for Disney, you may be able to go more than once too... could be worth it.

In short, Disney = spending a small fortune
(or stressing over every expense while you are there)

There are sooo many other WAY less expensive options that could be just as memorable and enjoyable. The real kicker is that my husband works for an airline company and gets great flying benefits. My kids LOVE Hawaii... which would cost a third the amount of a Disney trip. We've never been to Legoland and my kids have asked many times to go there.Way less than Disney. We could even buy passports for our kids and go somewhere foreign. Less than Disney. We could almost do all three for the same amount as ONE Disney trip.

In short again, Not going to Disney = New adventure elsewhere, more adventures elsewhere, AND more than likely saving money.

When ya lay it out like that, it's hard to choose Disney. Not that we won't ever go back but maybe right now is not the time for it? After all, we have kids ages 8, 6, 4, and 2. There would be a lot of missed rides and kids who may not remember it anyway and I'd most likely end up pushing the stroller around for hours with sleeping kids. Maybe it's all about timing here. Maybe when they are all old enough to ride it all! This year got a lot busier for my husband too. He's almost finished with his dreadful but fulfilling CPA exams(Hoping this time around we-yes we- are finished with the CPA exams chapter of life). He's a lot busier at work too which had influenced our travel dates anyway. We haven't decided to ditch Disney (for a couple more years) just yet. There are some other family factors I haven't mentioned but will you hate it if our Epic Mickey gets dusty.... really dusty?

Epic Mickey month 42

Ahhh... Another successful debt reduction month!

Seriously, we are pretty excited to see progress again. It has brought in topics of freedom in finances and of being able to put our money into more exciting pots....like retirement....wait....what?! Not exciting for you? Ya me neither... But for my hubby it gives him a piece  of mind and that's worth it and a few years down the road it'll give me a piece of mind too.

Now we get to think of saving money for a car, house updates, family vacations, and even a bit of regular SPLURGE money. I have to tell you, Dave's way says to try and include splurge money into your monthly budget all the time but we didn't follow that advice because we just really wanted debt gone and didn't like the guilt of spending on ourselves every month at least until we got past our huge school debt.

Now, we are excited to put it back into the budget! We have been planning out our big Mickey vacation and it's so exciting to see a bright light at the end of the tunnel!

Epic Mickey Debt Countdown Month 41!

Ahhh...,.. longest break ever from our debt countdown. If you haven't kept up on the posts, here are the simple reasons why it's been so long....

*May 2013 had my 4th baby. An easy $5000+ (But so worth it)

*June 2013 Sold our condo AND bought a HOME.
($245,000 for the new home, we were lucky to have a good down payment from selling the condo so our mortgage was just about $200,000, big difference from our $275 monthly condo payment, lol, but so worth it again)

*Moved into our home August 2013 and found termites. $1400.
Not thrilling but at least we were prepared and had the money to fix the problem.

*I also took a break from coupon shopping because keeping up with coupons while moving and trying to get settled just wasn't happening.

*July 2014 my husbands appendix burst... that nearly met our max out of pocket of $6400.
So grateful that we had a little bit saved in our HSA and emergency fund as well as good insurance... otherwise that bill would have been over $20,000.

Through all that we were just trying to adjust to the new mortgage payment and didn't feel like making big debt payments was possible... sometimes that was very frustrating since we were making so much headway before but it helped us to re-assess our budget once again and find ways to improve. We actually made some small payments but didn't keep track through out the months that are missing(32-40). Our loans are on forbearance so technically we don't have to make payments. There were some months we didn't. We have only about 10 months left of forbearance and we should be finished paying it all off well before then. YAY!

FINALLY, we are back on track for making regular big payments. We should be done by the end of May! YAY! YAY!!!!

Soooo Finally, HERE IS MONTH 41!

OK, the REAL Epic Mickey! Month 31!! Plus a sweet way to save!

So, I know... my April Fools joke... well it was mostly only funny mean to myself!
But it reminded me just how badly I want to fill in that chart and honestly be able to scream...
"WE ARE DEBT FREE!!"

We'll get there, and we did actually make huge progress towards that goal over the last month thanks to our tax return. It is sad to just hand over our tax return as soon as we receive it but...
it.is.going.to.be.worth.it. RIGHT?!

So here is the real Epic Mickey month 31!!

And... one of my favorite ways to save when you will be shopping anyway...

I know many of you have probably used ShopAtHome.com but wow, I totally scored today and wanted to share it so you can too!

My husband needed new dress shoes. He literally has worn multiple holes in the soles and even in the toe of the shoe... not a look one should head to work in. The thing is he is rough on shoes and we can not buy cheap ones for him or we would be buying a pair at least monthly. He loved the shoes he had because they have lasted and lasted and lasted... and they look good too!

So I searched for them online. Long story short, I bought the same ones, Ecco New Jersey slip on dress shoes on Shoebuy.com THROUGH ShopAtHome. These are NOT CHEAP shoes and we have put it off for as long as we could. So I was happy to find such a great deal on them.

This is the break down of the cost:

Original price. $101.99 Shoebuy.com
-20% discount with code SHOPATHOME
-Additional 15% cash back just for using ShopAtHome
- $30 Magazine Rebate
Total Cost: $39.51! Roughly 60% off!

(Plus we had a little over $13 sitting in our ShopAtHome account so if you take that off of the price, it is like paying $26! 75% off!!)

BONUS OFFER FOR OUR CUSTOMERS

The magazine rebate came as a huge bonus. When I was checking out, off to the right hand side of the screen, there was a message, like the one above, stating that I would be receiving a free subscription to People magazine($30 value) but that I could opt out and that there was a rebate available. So I clicked opt out, found the form to send in for the rebate and earned myself a cool $30 rebate on those shoes. SWEET!

So, friends... if I can save an easy 65% in just a few minutes on ONE item... so can you,
and then you can tell all your friends about it!

Epic Mickey Debt Count Down- Month 30!

Say WHAT?! "You ARE actually still doing this?!" some might ask.

Well. Yes. Yes we are. Of course, it has been ohhhh... like 9 months or so since I lasted posted about it. Since June actually. Sorry about that. It might have been the new baby, or the selling our old condo, moving twice, a new church calling, school, termites, and a million other things that kept us from getting back into the routine of Epic Mickey but excuses no more!

It has been a financial adjustment, to say the least, since selling our condo and buying a new home- a real home more than 3 times the size of our teeny tiny condo. Some might say, "But you are going against what Dave Ramsey teaches..." And you would be partially right. But that is another post to to come in the future. Keep your eyes peeled!

So without further ado... we jumped from month 21 to month 30! With not much progress on Mickey but LOTS of progress elsewhere. We DID pay 20% down in the new place which would have been more than enough to finish off Epic Mickey. It just made more sense to put it on the house and avoid PMI while simultaneously lowering our mortgage payment. PMI(Private Mortgage Insurance) would have been $240 more a month on top of the mortgage...what a a joke!

This does push our Student debt payoff back a bit but we have done our calculations and we *should* be on track to have it paid off by Feb 2015- JUST ONE MORE YEAR. We can make it!

Epic Mickey Debt Count Down ~ Month 21!

We were still able to fill in a good amount this month too(not near as many but that's ok).

Now we are back to saving money for a down payment for our next home...lol. We are hoping by the end of September we'll be ready... crossing our fingers and doing our best to SAVE SAVE SAVE!

HUGE Epic Mickey Debt Count Down!! Month 20!

Oh goodness...

We are only 4 months away from the mark we set to PAY OFF all our debts(besides the mortgage). This month sure did give it a good push! We decided to stall looking for a new home and put our savings for the down payment into our Debt Snowball!
Mickey is finally changing his looks a bit!

FINALLY DONE WITH HIS EARS! WOW!
As for our original goal of being out of Debt in 4 months, I'm sure hoping we can do it but it's going to take selling our condo to get there! We originally were going to rent out the condo but have decided {I think} that selling it is the best option for us in this time of our lives. We'll probably never get the chance to get such a good deal on a potential investment property again but we'll get the chance to be debt free and possibly have a 20% down on a new home!
Praying and hoping it works out that way!

As Dave says, pay off debts first, then save and invest!

And as I have always been taught by my parents and through my faith, have faith and trust in the Lord. While we have our agency, when we involve the Lord in our lives and every decision, we can be directed to where and what we are supposed to really be doing in this life and the next! I know that as we do our best the Lord helps make up in the areas we lack.
Thank Heavens for that!

Epic Mickey- Oh My Word it's been forever! Month 18~

Life seems to be slipping away from me, especially in terms of the Epic Mickey.

If you've been keeping up all these months and following the blog, you know we have started house hunting which has changed our budgeting goals a bit and Epic Mickey, while he was still getting filled in, got less attention for a few months. :( Not what we intended to have happen which means we need to get refocused again...

So I missed Month 17 all together and now I'm posting Month 18 very late...Month 18 should have been posted March 1st to represent everything we paid in February.

Well here it is now...

(Another one will soon follow for April)

Epic Mickey Debt Count Down YEAR END

Ok, the holidays and life just took over. I missed posting last month's and so this makes it the YEAR  END results!

We were able to pay some off in November but December was a storm of expenses so the month view isn't as impressive as the comparison to a year ago view! lol! So we'll go with staying positive and show you the year in comparison! :)

This is what Mickey looked like a year ago!

And this is what Mickey looks like TODAY!

Hoping by this Next Year End He'll be all the way filled in!!!

Happy New Year to all of you and may you be able to live within your means! :)

Epic Mickey Debt Countdown MONTH 14

QUICK RECAP:
We are on a more slow repayment plan with debt at the moment but this month we were able to pay a large lump sum because my hubby sold off a bunch of his cattle. So grateful for his wise decision to be a cattle rancher for fun! :)

We were able to fill in 44 squares this month! Feels great and helps the momentum pick back up again after our past few SLOW months.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WARNING LONG INFORMATIVE POST ON TRACKING YOUR FINANCIAL PROGRESS

Change has become about the only constant in our finances right now, lol.
Not due to income changing but to necessary expenses changing. With that in mind we have been trying to narrow down our families particular financial changes.
Let us share with you what we found. (Everyone's will be different)

Our Changing Financial Situations:

PROBLEM 1) Underestimated Medical Expenses for the Year

Last month, our oldest got her tonsils and adenoids removed... that is a total of about $4000 for the bill. Not to mention all the Dr.'s sick visits we have had to make- only a whopping $80 each time and then of course the prescription to go with it... not cheap.
Hopefully she won't be getting sick as much now that she has a clear throat!

SOLUTION To 1:
Since we have met the deductible (and exceeded it with this operation) we decided we better just maximize our health insurance use. Our boy was next in line for getting his tonsils out anyway. He may need the surgery worse than his big sister. So, here comes another big bill, luckily we'll only be paying 20% of this one.

PROBLEM 2) Priorities can change
We began with a plan to simply pay off all debt(besides the condo) before saving for a real home

SOLUTION to 2:
Our family is already too big for this tiny 1105 square foot condo without any yard. Now we are trying to save money for a down payment as well as pay off debt so that when we are debt free we can be ready to move.

We keep going back and forth on this one because we could just fully pay off the debt and then begin to save the down payment but really, I think I'm getting more anxious to get into a house with a yard and enough space for all of us. Our style is literally cramped! lol.

This goal may change next month, lol! *sigh*

PROBLEM 3) Growing Grocery Bill
There are a few main reasons for this
1)The Economy
(PLEASE boot out Obama! We need a real recovery!)
Food prices are so much higher now! Just even a couple of years ago I could get milk for $1.50 or less and cereal(with coupons) for a $.25 to a $1!! Now it's hard to get milk for $2.50 and cereal(with coupons) for $2!

2) Growing Kids
They just don't stop growing! And that's a good thing! With a 5 1/2, 4 and 19 month old, they need more and more nutrition. GOOD nutrition. I've said before that we are no longer a 1 Box Mac & Cheese Family, we are a 2 BOX but really we are almost a 3 box! That's TRIPLE the expense! No I don't consider Mac & Cheese to be good nutrition but I can't consider it to be a super cheap meal anymore either! BTW, Kraft Mac & Cheese used to be a quarter on sale... do you remember those days? Now a sale price is $.75-1 a box!

3)Gas Prices
This just goes back to the Economy but when gas prices are up, food prices and all product prices are too! When I was 16(it was over a decade ago but still...) gas was under a $1! The lowest I paid for it was $.76 a gallon! NOW, $3.80-$4.00+ a gallon. We do drive to the store for food so that goes into the cost of groceries too.

SOLUTION to 3:
Well, I don't have much of a solution here accept that we need to adjust as necessary to fit the nutritional needs of our family.
Oh and walk to the grocery store with a HUGE HUGE stroller... ok, J/K... possible but not really for us. I'm not sure I'm ready to look like the really crazy coupon lady! lol!
**Buy a Deep Freeze and do freezer meals. LOTS OF THEM.
Finally,
It is a need for us. Cutting down on the grocery bill as much as possible is the best I can do.

OVERALL Solution:
With all of this happening, we're realizing that life will only continue to get more complicated and unpredictable. However, since we know it is becoming more unpredictable, we can plan for it to be unpredictable! Confused?

Well, now we can look back at the past year and say,

"Wow we underestimated what we would need for medical expenses this year."

So next year, we can look ahead and at least say,

"Ok we need to plan that our kids will get sick (hopefully not as much as the past year) so we need to have that money set aside for Dr.'s visits and prescriptions."

It's been a year of financial learning for us,
and it's not over yet!

The GOOD part is when we look back on the past year, we have really done well over all.
We have paid off close to $38,000 in debt
And have been putting my husband through school part time!

Remember we sold our second car(that helps a ton), paid off our remodel expenses, most of our borrowed down payment, and made extra student loan payments as well as our normal mortgage payments.

**We don't include our mortgage debt on our Epic Mickey as that will be a separate goal of it's own once all other debt is gone.

So as we are coming closer to another year end of finances,
I urge you all to take a look BACK to see what you have done well and where you can improve with your finances. If you are married, please include both spouses in the conversation.

We all know finances can cause a lot of arguments and conflicts in marriage and many marriages result in that ugly "D" word due to such conflicts so try to handle with care and prepare together!

Feel free to share what you have learned with us too!

2012 Financial Goals: UPDATE

October 1, 2012 UPDATE:
I like looking back at this post from the beginning of the year. It sure helps to reevaluate where we are and what we need to do moving forward!
APRIL 9, 2012 UPDATE:

2012 Financial Goals at our household!

Of course, we have had some unexpected expenses and probably a bit of a relapse in focus with these goals. I will be soo happy to have just one ear completed by year end... even better if we have both but looking at our current situation, both will be extremely difficult.

(THIS ONE IS GOING TO BE COMPLETED FOR SURE AND THE RIGHT EAR WILL TOO!!!)
My husband says he will fill in the left ear of Mickey while I work on the rest. Mickey should be at least 1/3 the way filled in by the end of the year.

THIS ONE WAS A COMPLETE FAILURE, MAYBE RATHER NOT THOUGHT THROUGH ENOUGH... MY HUBBY ADMITTED I AM ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD WITH OUR BUDGET, LOL... THIS IS A COMPLETE 180% OF MY PRE-MARITAL FINANCIAL SKILLS.
My husband and I are switching roles in the finance department, he's taking over the bills and budget so I can focus more on the family and the house.

I'm SURE GLAD we accomplished this one waaayyy back in February! CHECK!
WE ACTUALLY HAD THIS PAID OFF IN MID FEBRUARY!!! I GUESS WE NEED SOME MORE AGGRESSIVE FINANCIAL GOALS!
We will have Home Depot paid off by the end of March and the car paid off by the end of the year. That's a lot to pay off but we'll do our best!

I HAVE TO SAY, LOOKING BACK AT THIS QUICK LITTLE SCRAMBLED POST THAT WE HAVE PRETTY MUCH ROCKED IT WITH OUR GOALS AND LEARNED THAT WORKING TOGETHER IN OUR FINANCES IS BEST (SOMETHING WE ALWAYS ASSUMED BUT I GUESS WE THOUGHT WE'D TEST IT TO MAKE SURE... SILLY US.)

Epic Mickey Catch-up!

I realize that I haven't posted updates on the Epic Mickey for a while now.
We have months 11, 12, and 13 to account for!

We are in a weird financial spot right now, more because we have so much life going on that we have realized we need to re-adjust and re-calculate current expenses and future expenses.

Here are our TOP topics when it comes to Finance:

1) Paying Off Debt
We are sooo sick of DEBT!

2) Figuring out how to make more money to help pay off debt
Again... we are SOO sick of DEBT!

3) Saving for a HOME
Our family is too big for this teeny tiny condo!

4) Growing Grocery Bill
With food prices going up, coupon prices going down, our family food consumption doubling... we need more money for groceries. (We are now a 2 box Mac & Cheese Family instead of one...lol)

5) Preparing for future Medical expenses
Removing tonsils isn't cheap! Next time we'll be more financially prepared.

Ok. so with out further delay... here is our progress... LOOK CLOSE :)

Somehow we didn't get a picture of Month 12! I swear I took one
(being the big 1 year mark and all) but can not find it!

3 Things to Know About MLBB

(picture)

As you may have noticed, I am posting a little less each week.

I have allowed myself to spend way too much on time on my blog with posts and background work promoting it like crazy which has made me feel crazy.  I have taken time to refocus and re-evaluate my own personal goals in life and realize that blogging really doesn't rank very high as I am a wife and a mother of three children.

So... Here are 3 things I want you to know about my blog:

1) I have had lots of fun learning how to "be a blogger" , sharing deals and ways to save, as well as bringing you awesome giveaways!

2) I can not continue to put as much time into this blog as I have been doing over the past couple of months or I will end up in an institution for crazies, lol! *Sigh*

3) I will continue to blog but it will not be my primary focus from here on out. I love my family, faith, and life too much to spend all my time online.

This means:

1) You will see less posts about daily deals and ad match ups.

2) The posts I actually do put up will be more relevant to my life and hopefully yours too.

3) You can always get ad match ups for my Grocery Smarts page every single day of the week for any store in our area!
4) I may also occasionally do a giveaway here and there so please do check back every once in a while :)

5) I will try to continue to share our Epic Mickey Debt Countdown success along the way as well.
I let myself get behind on this one already, a catch up Epic Mickey post is in the near future.

I hope you all understand and will continue to follow posts in the future.
Thank you all for you support!

Epic Mickey Debt Count Down Month 10

It's been another slow month for paying off debt... wish I could say otherwise. We have felt a lot more freedom financially but things keep coming up and keeping us from totally dumping debt as planned.
We need to remember that WE are the ones that tell our money where to go :)

What's your secret to telling your money where to go?

**As a family we decided to change our lives by paying off debt. We needed motivation to keep us going. This Epic Mickey represents how much debt we owe. Each filled in square represents a dollar amount paid off. Once the entire Mickey is filled in, we will be debt free besides our home. Then we'll party in style with Disney to celebrate! We have included a monthly plan to have the savings set aside to pay for the trip too so we won't be back tracking just to celebrate. Take the journey with us as we share tips and tricks to save money, generate more money, free ourselves from the chains of debt and create a better future for our family and yours!

I try to post this at the 1st of every month and so thought I did it for the month of June... but I was just sitting here going hmm... it just feels like it has been a long time since I posted that... lets just look. Oops. Sorry.

It wasn't terribly eventful but we did pay off a bit and color in some squares.

Here it is!
(After a little bit of camera drama... I almost thought I was going to need a new one... phew... it worked)

Epic Mickey Debt Countdown- Month 8

I promised the month of April would be another Epic one and it has been for sure!
We filled in a total of 178 squares! On a normal month from here on out we'll be able to mark off about 18-20 squares a month. Each square represents $75... yes, that is a lot of moola we still owe! And A LOT of moola we paid off this month.

It has been incredible how much of a difference selling our second car has made.

Selling our second car, of course, brought down our total debt but also freed up a lot of extra monthly cash... and most importantly, our attitudes have changed greatly about our goal of getting out of debt. We were gung ho before selling it but somehow we are like 10 times more aggressive about it now.

And, if something pops up(like having to replace the car brakes, yes this just happened... getting it done this week) we don't stress... we know we can do it easily  in one paycheck and still pay off debt. It feels great.

Epic Mickey Debt Countdown- Month 7

The month of March was not as impressive as last months but we did fill in 14 squares total!

UPDATE: SOLD!!! (watch for next months Epic Mickey)
The month of April may WILL be yet again another Epic one! We are selling SOLD our second car (my very lovely Honda pilot which I so hate to sell but not as much as I hate living in a tiny condo, lol) and that would erase about $14000 in debt just this month!

If you are local(in utah) and interested in buying it check out the postings here and here for more details. (You'll be helping us get out of debt so not only do you get an awesome car but you can feel great about it too!)

And just in case you didn't catch the past months of our Epic Mickey... compare our progress here.
